DIY scraper for stencilling iced cookies

A scraper is a ‘must have’ tool when stencilling with royal icing so we thought we would show you how to make your own one. You can buy icing smoothers from baking shops but we have found that the plastic is too hard and not flexible enough to work effectively.

We have made the scraper using a recycled ice-cream lid, we love being able to use recycled goods wherever we can. If you don’t have a ice cream lid you can use any other recycled products with the same plastic such as a yoghurt lid.

You will need:

  • Ice cream lid or yoghurt lid
  • Ruler
  • Pencil
  • Scissors

The first thing you need to do is cut the ‘lip’ of the ice cream lid off, this then leaves you with a flat surface to draw onto.

Using your ruler measure and mark out 6 x 9 cm onto your ice-cream lid. We find this size works the best as it fits easily into your hand, allowing you to effectively spread your icing over your stencil design.

Now that you have your rectangle cut out, use your scissors and slighty round the corners just on the one length- this will be the top of your scraper. Leave the bottom end straight as this is the side you will use to scrap the icing over the design.

You are now ready to put your royal icing scraper to use.

Things to remember when stencilling with royal icing:

  • You need to use thick but not dry consistency icing, (think peanut butter consistency) add a few drops of water to your stiff icing.
  • We would also recommend using a stencil buddy or metal board with magnets.
